When Should I Consider a Large Renovation?

It’s natural for many people to want to change their decor as the years go by. As trends change, or your living situation changes, you may have considered a large-scale renovation. But, many people ask me, “How do I know I am ready for a huge renovation?” It’s hard to know the right time to undertake something that will affect your daily life, but we have some tips for you to consider:

Source: Pexels.com

Do you have any big life events coming up? If you are going to be part of something big like a wedding, or have family or friends coming to stay with you for an extended period of time, renovating a large part of your home can feel really stressful. Particularly in the kitchen, not having access to your dishwasher, sink, etc, can be really challenging if you are busy in other aspects of your life. It’s a good idea to do a renovation when you can devote time and energy to navigating living around the areas being re-done. Some people are also able to stay somewhere else, but it’s not an option for everyone.

Can you afford the renovation and the associated costs? If you are renovating an area like your kitchen, you need to consider that you might not have access to your cupboards, fridge, stove or oven as easily as you would normally. Sometimes these appliances can be moved to your garage, but many people end up eating out or getting more takeout than normal. These costs can add up rapidly, so it’s good to budget for them ahead of time. It’s also good to be sure to budget for more than the estimated costs, so you have a cushion. Renovations can be unpredictable and can sometimes have unanticipated costs.

Is everyone in the family supportive of these changes? If you’re married or a parent, it’s wise to make sure that everyone in your household understands the general timeline, budget, and changes that are ahead! Getting your whole family on board with the project can help everyone feel more confident in the end result, and keep all the attitudes a little more positive. If you have small children, they can have anxiety if there are laborers coming in and out of the home or if their rooms are being worked on, so it’s good to prepare them beforehand.

A large-scale renovation such as a kitchen, living area or multiple bedrooms can be challenging, but also extremely rewarding!

Creating a Workspace that Works for You

With many of us working from home or doing some of our work remotely, it’s nice to create a dedicated space that’s not the dining room table or surrounded by piles of laundry! Here are some of our tips for finding and creating a space for work that brings you peace and serenity:

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

-Assess your needs: Decide how much time you will be spending in your workspace. If it will be your primary workspace, you’ll want a little more space and dedicated area than if you only work at it once a week. If you are tight on space, consider non-traditional spaces like your dining room, master bedroom, or an unused closet. Check your existing furniture to see if there’s anything you can repurpose (like a desk, entry table, or chairs), and make a list of what’s needed.

-Go shopping: If you’re needing a custom size or shape, Ikea is a great idea for customizable sizing and desks. Some of their tabletop surfaces and table legs are interchangeable so you can mix and match them to suit your decor. Although they’re not the highest quality, it can work well for spaces like closets or alcoves where the space is uniquely shaped. If your budget is a bit wider, consider having a custom desk or table built, or search places like West Elm for well-made and beautiful pieces that can you can enjoy for years to come. We love this Mid-century beauty!

-Add in clever storage solutions: Nothing is worse than tons of jumbled cords, but if you’re working remotely or with lots of tech products, you’ll want one of these cool cord hiding boxes. Don’t forget a pen holder, a pretty calendar, and a file holder if you’re dealing with paperwork. We love this gorgeous organizer from Pottery Barn. For a more elevated look, consider raising your computer monitor up with a platform that creates more space and looks a bit more modern.

-Lastly, add aesthetic details: You’ll want your space to reflect your personal style, so don’t forget added details like candles, plants, or pretty photo frames! Hobby Lobby is a great spot for more trendy pieces that you may want to swap out within the next year or so, but if you’re looking for higher quality, Studio McGee’s regular collection is wonderful as well.

If you need help designing the space you’ll love, please reach out to us! We can schedule a design consult at your convenience!

Why Hire a Professional for a Renovation or Interior Design

Source: Pexels.com

Hiring a professional designer is something many people think is a luxury, and comes with a luxury price tag. While it’s definitely something that can’t be done every quarter for many people, it is actually quite attainable for almost every budget. As an interior designer, I often meet with people who think they could “never” afford my services, but they find out that the service is truly invaluable.

-For many people, interior design is abstract and challenging: When you hire a professional, you are getting their experience, time, and eye for your space. Making all of the decisions alone can feel very overwhelming for someone who isn’t naturally inclined to design, and can leave lots of people feeling like giving up at the process. This leads to letting rooms or spaces sit for months or even years, without any progress! I totally know that it’s not the job for everyone, and that’s why there are people like me :)

-Hiring a professional means you will actually utilize your budget in the best way. A professional designer knows where to invest in amazing pieces, paint, or hardware, so that you get the most bang for your buck. Rather than splurging on things that don’t matter, an experienced designer knows where your money will be best spent, and how to get you the look you truly want. They also know which things to cut out or add in to achieve the maximum impact.

-Hiring a professional saves you time: If you’re a working parent, you know how valuable your time is. Hiring someone to do something time intensive, such as interior design or renovations, is actually a great way to do things “smarter not harder”! Budget for it, save, and rest assured knowing that you are giving yourself the gift of time by asking someone else to do something that is not in your own wheelhouse. Hiring someone you trust, with experience, will also get the process done much faster than you trying on your own with limited time and resources!

As a professional designer and event planner, I love helping my clients recognize the value in hiring a creator and professional! Many clients are surprised and pleased at how easy the process is, and how grateful they are (and wish they had done it sooner!). Let’s get started today, just contact us under the contact tab!

Christmas Morning Cozy

Christmas morning is something that we all look forward to, but maybe no one as much as us moms (and dads). We love seeing the faces of our children or our loved ones light up as they unwrap gifts and gather together. It is a special moment that I wouldn’t trade for anything! But over the years, I have learned how to streamline and simplify our Christmas decor and the way the morning unfolds, in order to be present in the moment. Here are some of my best tips:

Source: Pexels.com

-Do a breakfast or brunch prep the night before: Of course we all love fresh cinnamon rolls or eggs and fruit, but many of these things can be prepped early on. I recommend cutting any fresh fruit (except bananas) the night before and putting it in a glass snap top container. Add a few drops of lemon juice to prevent any browning, and slice the bananas the morning of, which will keep them from getting soggy in the dish. For yeast or cinnamon rolls, they are easy to do the night before with just the dough or prepped in a glass pyrex, and bake them the morning of so they’re fresh and warm! Even raw eggs can be mixed with chopped veggies, cheese, and heavy cream, and put in a Tupperware overnight to be turned into an easy scramble in the morning.

-Move a trash can into the general gift-opening area, along with scissors! You will be able to really enjoy the gift-opening if you aren’t having to hop up and down a million times to get the things you may need. Of course, you don’t want a trashcan in all your pretty photos, so either use a little basket or tote, or move it out of the frame :)

-Set your table to be the place to gather after or before gift openings: The more comfortable your guests feel, the longer they will linger, and you will get the easy, beautiful and restful morning you long for! I like to layer my table with lots of different textures, and linens that are washable if little ones are going to be dining with us. That way, you don’t need to worry about things being too ‘fancy’ to enjoy. Opt for neutrals, and leave enough space for people to move around and chat. Always have an extra place setting set aside, in case an unexpected guest arrives and needs a place to sit!

-Cue up the playlist: Have friends and family put together some of their favorite holiday tunes before the big day, and put them into a super fun playlist! Have it ready to roll (and put it on repeat) before the festivities get underway, and set the mood with a scented candle, a crock pot of cocoa (add lids to cups for little ones to avoid spills near all the presents), and plenty of pillows or floor cushions for all the people you love!

Front Porch Decor for Fall:

Your front porch is one of the best ways to show off your personal style! It is often the first thing that people see when they arrive at your home, and even if you don’t have a huge porch, you can add small touches that will liven up your door.

-Buffalo print doormat: The layered doormat look is a way to add depth and texture to your entryway. They are really affordable on Amazon, and can be found at most large retailers like Target for under $30. Layer it under a regular doormat, and it can stay there all the way through the holidays with a different mat on top!

-Lanterns: No matter your budget, you can find a gorgeous lantern for fall everywhere from West Elm to Home Goods. Look for a quality, well-made lantern that has a heavy weight and is easy to lift. Well made lanterns feature sturdy seams and real wood or metal frames, and the glass will be well-secured inside the panels. If you want to add some light without actual flames, you can find really realistic LED candles at most retailers to place inside.

-Wreath: We love the Magnolia leaf wreath for a classic, timeless style that never will look dated. If you want something more seasonal, look for burlap details, rust and orange tones and greenery without a lot of extra fluff. Avoid bargain stores for wreaths, and look for good quality greenery so it doesn’t look cheapy. Avoid large bows or sheer ribbons if you can, because these wear out quickly, and don’t last longer than a season or two.

-Plants: You can go with real or faux plants, and they will add a ton to your entry area. I love the look of potted mums, which are easy to take care of, and inexpensive. You can group them together in large quantities to create an impressive fall display, and even add pumpkins in for a more polished look. Costco often has them for about $15 each year, starting in late August.

Stylish Storage Totes for Summer

When it comes to toting around your stuff, you want something that is not only practical, but beautiful! Summer is one of those times of the year when you usually have way more stuff to carry around: beach towels, swimsuits, sunscreen, snacks, and water bottles…the list goes on! Not only are there amazingly beautiful totes available these days, but they are ones that you can use as storage IN your house or room which saves a ton of space! Here are some of our favorites:

SOURCE: World Market

-Apolis Global: One of our favorite companies, because they also employ women around the world at a livable and sustainable wage. We love that they are sustainable and also make gorgeous products. Their stunning bags wipe clean on the inside, and I’m sure that you have seen them on Instagram. They look beautiful in a mudroom or entryway, filled with fresh flowers, or to store things like extra shoes, towels, or books when you’re not using them for the beach or playdates. It’s rare that a gorgeous bag can double as storage, but it’s versatile and worth the money.

-Amazon market totes: If you can’t quite swing the Apolis totes, check out the dupes on Amazon (just type in market bag dupes) and find them for under $25. To be clear, the quality is not nearly the same, and they are not sustainable, but if you have little kids, you may want something that’s not as expensive to lose or stain. You could also try them out before you make the larger purchase.

-As you know, I am a big fan of market totes and baskets, because they are also able to be used as secondary storage in the off season. I like to load them up with fresh or faux greenery and add them to a counter or entry bench space for a pop of color and texture. If you want to find the best, authentic ones, check out small businesses and creators, or sites like Etsy. They can also be found at places like Estate Sales or Thrift Stores, but they’re pretty popular, so they’re harder to come by. Amazon has a nice version for under $50, if you are just testing out the trend.

-Although storage baskets aren’t something you would take to the beach as easily, they can be used for travel or toting things between houses if needed. They look amazing on the floor or shelves, filled with throw pillows or blankets, or to hide kid’s toys. If you’re looking for a great place to find those types of baskets, check out World Market for affordable pieces that will withstand the test of time. Try to display them in pairs for maximum impact

What to Do When Your Style Feels Stale

I have periods of time when I get a little antsy, and want to change up a ton of decor, and others where I am content with how my home or space is. I think we all have waves of inspiration when it comes to decor, and that’s fairly normal! Of course as an interior designer, I feel more inclined to be thinking about design and style more than a typical person, but I also want my home to be a peaceful space where I feel content. It’s always a balance! Today, I want to talk about what to do when you feel like your style doesn’t represent you anymore, and how to handle it:

SOURCE: PEXELS.COM

  1. Figure out if it’s the decor, or if it is something else in your life: Sometimes, we can want to change our decor because something in our lives feels chaotic. I have definitely been there, and have found it’s really healthy to take a few days to assess what is adding stress to your life. Sometimes it’s not decor, but it’s a lack of organization and sometimes, it’s too busy of a schedule or a stressful family situation. Before making drastic decor changes, take a day to breathe and see if there are other factors at play.

  2. If you decide something about your decor is bothering you and you still want to change it, begin with cleaning and decluttering: Purge things you don’t use anymore, put away laundry, and organize things into bins or into storage that you don’t need in that specific room or space. This will give you a nice, neutral canvas to start with, and let you see what you’re working with.

  3. Begin by deciding what color scheme or decor you are going for. If you are struggling to decide what might go together, consider building a storyboard or a Pinterest idea board to find things that you love. Look for common themes in things you “pin”, such as if you always gravitate towards a farmhouse style, or that you love the color blue. If you’re looking to make a large change, consider hiring someone for a consultation and help. Here at AWD, we would love to help guide your choices to build a space that reflects your needs.

  4. Set a budget: If you are on a tight budget, begin looking at what you can use that you already own. If you hate the style of your photo frames or a gallery wall, maybe you can paint them to one neutral color and reuse them, or use chalk paint to cover an ugly nightstand into something more usable. You’ll never regret giving a piece second life with paint, and if you don’t love it, you will be more likely to sell it on Marketplace or Craigslist with a fresh coat! If you have the budget, consider high quality items that will last, from estate sales or higher-end furniture stores.

Changing your decor can feel overwhelming, but that’s where we come in. We love working with our clients to bring their vision to life. Call us today!

Neutrals: the best blank canvas!

Trends fluctuate constantly. The four seasons constantly revolve each year, bringing with them familiar themes and color schemes. For this reason, setting your interior’s stage with tact will pay it forward as you prepare to make transitions through both seasons and trends in decor.

Through the flux, what design element has your back?

Neutrals.

Now before anyone loses their composure thinking we’re divorcing from color, consider these thoughts. You, too, may realize why neutral interiors truly are your best friend.

Neutrals provide a blank canvas for your seasonal tastes.

Maintaining a calmer setting in your interiors allows for a greater range of play with your holiday and seasonal decor. You know your space can handle the added pops of color or textures for autumn or the winter holidays when it begins in a blissful medium. It then becomes the perfect landscape to showcase your seasonal pieces. Or even keep a quietly sophisticated backdrop for those 50th birthday decorations.

You’ll love their versatility.

When your home decor’s “base layer” begins with a neutral palette, there’s a greater ease in swapping out pieces as your tastes or preferences change. When trends introduce their latest offerings, you’ll feel much more confident working in that velvet, emerald settee you had to have when your space’s color scheme has room to easily adjust. The flexibility in how you edit and add drama or flair is endless.

They’re timeless.

Neutrals bring with them longevity. While blush and brass may come and go, grays, whites, and creams always have their place. Let them lead you with class into whatever the year or seasonal trends dictate. They’ll be your constant friend as you make the pivots!

Colors of the Year: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating

Pantone chose two colors for the year 2021, a gorgeous dark gray, and a bright, cheery yellow! They describe it as a “marriage of colors about the human spirit”, and I love the combo. Although I don’t typically combine those exact shades, I love a great neutral gray and a pretty pop of yellow, especially in the springtime. I wanted to highlight some things you can do to bring these shades into your home (even if you don’t choose those exact Pantone hues). We are a distributor for Jolie Paint, so we can also help you choose the shade that best suits your home or style!

-Grey in bedding: This is a fun trend! Anthropologie always has the best bedding around, and they have some really gorgeous gray sets right now, especially this relaxed linen style. I love the oversized, draped-over-the-bed look, and who doesn’t love some extra comforter to cuddle up in when it’s cold? Use one size up than your bed size for extra length on both sides! Find my favorite comforter HERE

-Pop of mustard yellow: I love a tiny bit of yellow mixed with pretty neutrals, and in moderation, it can work as a super elegant pairing. This pillow from Target is inexpensive, and can be a fun way to “try” a new color in your home without committing to something more permanent like paint or furniture. We also love the idea of a mustard throw blanket, a candle, or a frame to introduce the hue into your decor in a subtle way. Look for mustard yellow with an undertone of grey or cream for something soft and usable.

-Gray door: This is a cute and not-as-trendy way to bring in some neutrals to your exterior paint. I have seen lots of pretty examples on Pinterest, but really any shade of gray looks pretty with white trim, and with almost any exterior shade. Accent a gray front or back door with black planters, modernized house numbers, and a fun doormat to keep it interesting!

If you’re wanting to bring in these colors but aren’t sure how, please contact me. i’d love to help you rethink your decor and making it fit your personality!

Minimalist Christmas Decor at Target

As most of you know, I love decorating for Christmas! But what I love about the holidays is when there are non-traditional pieces that incorporate neutrals! It makes it fun to try new trends and ideas when it comes to holiday decor because it’s often less expensive and can be changed out year to year. Besides the adorable collection from Magnolia, Target has some real winners this year…I may or may not have checked them out when I was picking up groceries! What I love about their new collections are that they are much more understated and simple than some from past years. Here are my picks for some gorgeous new items to add to your collection:

These adorable mini trees: What a cute little set of trees! They are affordable, and the little matte black planters that they come in go with ANY holiday theme perfectly! They don't scream “Christmas” but feel festive, cozy and polished. I love the clean feel they give a tablescape or mantle. Buy all three for a great little set!

This matte black sign: This would look amazing in any living room, hanging on a door inside or outside, and for the price, you can pick up more than one! These look great on any neutral colored wall, or even hanging on a front door in place of a wreath.

This wooden, farmhouse style sign: This isn’t as minimalist as some of the rest of the collection, but it would be perfect in a living room or dining room, in place of regular decor, or even outside (it’s not weatherproof, so it would have to be a covered patio type location). I love the black and white tones, and the cute print! It looks much more high-end than it is.

This candle holder wreath is my favorite piece in the entire holiday collection: How gorgeous is this? It’s understated, beautiful, and super simple. It’s just lovely, and it looks like something from Pottery Barn. Matte black makes a perfect accompaniment for patterns like buffalo check or a soft plaid. Two of these would look perfect as as symmetrical decorations on either side of a mantle or tree!

A Few Do's and Don'ts for your Home Decor

We have been doing this for several years, so many aspects of home decor come naturally. But when we are working with new clients, I love getting back to basics and reminding myself of the things I’ve learned along the way. Here is a fun little glimpse into that journey, with some do’s and don’ts of decor:

Source: pexels.com

Source: pexels.com

DO pay attention to proportions: This is one of the most important aspects of design aesthetics. An enormous light fixture will dwarf things in a small space with a short ceiling. If you have a lot of oversized items, make sure you have height and space to accommodate them so that your space doesn’t look even smaller. And if you choose oversized lamps, chairs, etc, be sure to make them the focal point in the room so they get the attention they deserve.

DON’T use cheap, small linens and pillows: I cannot emphasize the difference that great pillows and linens can make when it comes to your bedroom and living space. Look for throw pillows that are substantial, that don’t collapse when you lean on them, and that are nicer fabrics like linen and cotton. I love Pottery Barn for pillows that will hold up for years with proper care and usage, but Target actually has a few really nice quality options that are under $25 each, and still look nice, especially if you have small children who are prone to spills or jumping on your couch! When it comes to bedding, Pottery Barn and West Elm really can’t be beat when it comes to lasting, soft bedding that will make you thrilled to come to bed!

DO include pops of color: Even if you really love a neutral palette, a pretty pop of color here and there can make a beautiful visual impression. The color accents don’t need to be drastic or even permanent; a plant, a bouquet, a gorgeous hardcover…they can all add a little spark of fun to any aesthetic from farmhouse to bohemian. Because I personally love taupe, whites, and cream, I love using greenery to give some colorful personality to my spaces (a fiddle leave fig or olive tree are both subtle options).

DON’T underestimate the power of rugs: A lovely, quality rug can enhance the space you’re in, but be sure to get the proportions and measurements just right. Measure the room you’re putting it in, and consider where your furniture is within the area. Make sure it’s truly large enough for a room like a living or dining room, as many people have trouble when they get a rug home from the store, and realize it’s not as large as it appeared when it was rolled up. When you’re shopping for a new rug, also look for high quality materials and a backing that will hold up for years to come.

If you are looking to refresh your personal space or home, please let us know. We would love to help you arrange and redecorate your home, so that it becomes the oasis you dream of!

Cozy Hues for Valentine's Day

What’s better than curling up by the fireside with the ones you love? Not much. As the “day of love” approaches, I wanted to share some of my favorite items that will give your living room or bedroom a cozy and welcoming feel. Even after Valentine’s Day has passed, you will still be feeling all the warm-and-fuzzies with the ones you cherish the most!

-Anthropologie Unicorn Candle: This is such a gorgeous design, and the scent is to die for! The gorgeous rose pink glass is delicately rounded, and is filled with a hand-poured wax. At $40, it’s a little steep for one candle, but it makes a gorgeous gift, and a lovely accent for a coffee table, bathroom counter, or arranged with other items as a centerpiece. It’s available at Nordstrom online, and at Anthropologie online. Add some peonies in a vase for a cheery and romantic look.

-Faux fur ruched throw: This throw has unexpected details like ruching along the seams, and it’s a cool statement piece that’s practical as well. Pottery Barn throws are more expensive than one you’d find at Home Goods, but they also last much longer, and are a more generous size. THIS ONE is sustainably sourced, and is a 60x80 size..perfect to snuggle with your children or the one you love while you read books or watch your favorite movies!

-This fun and youthful heart shaped wreath: Our latest Target find is under $20, and is adorable for a child’s bedroom or for something pretty and fun to decorate your dining room or a large mirror. It’s affordable, and easy to swap out when the holiday is over. Although it’s not as high quality as a piece from West Elm or Pottery Barn, it will last a few seasons. We love the Olive branch faux branches, and the unique floral detail. it’s also perfect if you’re throwing a Valentine’s party.

-Stay Awhile Wood Decor: a true design steal at just $8, this adorable hexagon sign from Hobby Lobby is adorable, and the perfect piece for a bathroom shelf or bookshelf. It’s white, blends in easily, and can work with any type of decor from farmhouse to minimalism. Mix it with some pinks and reds for a pretty and feminine look, and consider gifting it when you’re done if you don’t have a permanent place for it! It makes a perfect gift when paired with some flowers (think housewarming!)

-Chevron velvet pillow: Another Target find that looks high-end, this pillow has gorgeous, Anthropologie-inspired details, and is still under $20! The color is perfect, isn’t too garish or gaudy, and it fits in with any other neutrals like grey or cream. Place it on your bed with a selection of pretty linens (cream or white), or add it to your couch for a pop of color that fits the holiday! It’s even prettier in person, and most of the Target stores have it in stock.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Get (and stay) Organized this Year

If you’re working on organizing your home, you may know the three areas that are the toughest to keep tidy: the closets, the pantry, and that dreaded garage! These spaces tend to become “catch-alls”, especially if you have children, and it can be super hard to keep them up as the year wanes on. Here’s how to get a head start on making your home usable, tidy, and how to maintain the clutter-free environment!

Source: Pexels.com

Source: Pexels.com

Start by clearing out the things you don’t use. This seems pretty obvious, but you’ll be surprised at how many things are in the crevasses and closets that you simply forgot you owned. The less items that are in the garage/pantry/closets, the less you’ll need to organize and clean, so it’s a major win to get rid of as much as you can. Begin by actually removing everything, and we mean EVERYTHING. Be sure to ask your family members before you throw all of their things away (ha!). Vacuum, sweep or mop, and scrub away any dirt in grout/hardwood/tile or carpet. You want to start with a very clean and sanitized space so you don’t have to continue moving things in and out repeatedly.

Tackle just one space at a time: It is very easy to get overwhelmed quickly when you start this project. Instead of committing to do every closet in the house, pick just one. Spend a whole day working on the pantry, and allow a few solid days to tackle a large project like the garage. Enlist older children or your spouse to help, but delegate tasks so you’re all not hovering in one tiny space or getting in each other’s way. It actually helps if you can split it up over five weekends or five days to do two days of closets, one on the pantry, and two for the garage. Block out the time and commit to it…you’ll be so glad you did.

Ditch the packaging in the pantry: If you’re used to keeping all the boxes/containers in your pantry, this may sound strange, but the aesthetic and organization that happens when you put your staples and food into glass or plastic bins will motivate you to keep it tidy. It also looks beautiful and cohesive in your space, and allows you to clearly see what you have on hand. We recommend Amazon, Ikea, or the Container Store for inexpensive and durable containers to get your pantry under control. I recently saw a great idea where instead of a spice cupboard, someone used a drawer! They minimized their spices to what they really used and then laid they flat in a kitchen drawer, making them easier to sort, find, and maintain, rather than rifling through a cupboard. Keep cereal, baking supplies, chips, crackers, and kid’s snacks in clear, easy to see containers, and get can racks for things like chicken broth, beans, and veggies. You will also save time by making the pantry more efficient.

In the closets, make a system: If you have children, sort out clothing that is too big or too small, and designate a bin for each. Get rid of things with stains, items that don’t fit, and don’t forget their dressers or wardrobes in addition to their closets. If you’re using the closets to additional toy storage, figure out how to separate out both toys and clothes, so that you have it divided neatly in half (top and bottom, or left and right sides, etc.) If you can afford to, buy matching hangers so that the clothes will hang evenly (and look nicer), and purchase matching plastic bins or drawers for additional storage. If you have a larger budget and a walk-in closet, consider adding wooden shelves to provide more space for baskets and bins for hairbows, belts, hats, scarves, winter wear, etc. If your kids are past the baby stage, cycle seasonal clothes to the garage to free up space and help your children find their current items more easily. If you are organizing your own closet, follow the same steps. You may find that you hardly wear the majority of your closet, and you could donate or consign the nicer items. This purging and organizing will also save you time (which we can all use, right?!), because you will stop searching for missing shoes, certain sweaters or tops, or by being overwhelmed by the amount of clothes/decisions.

-Beautify the storage: As we mentioned, pretty storage solutions will motivate you to keep your things in their place. Ikea has an amazing selection of white totes of various sizes, as well as metal hooks and baskets for hanging storage if your space is small. If you can’t afford a ton of new items, focus on one area at a time, as your budget allows. It is better to fully complete a single space, than to put off all of the closets/messes until you can afford them all. It is also an emotional process, because you will feel more likely to continue if you can “complete” one fully at a time!

Beautiful storage solutions can free up the time you spend cleaning, organizing, and putting things away. This is a principal many people use when they live a minimalist lifestyle, but you don’t have to be a minimalist to appreciate and utilize these ideas! Good luck as you organize and plan out a tidier 2020!

Cozy up for Christmas

When I step into the door after a long day, there is nothing I love more than feeling the warmth and comfort of home. Especially at Christmastime, coming home to a cozy (even if it’s not perfectly clean!) living area is one of the best things ever. Not only is a beautiful home aesthetically pleasing, it creates peace for your children and loved ones. I once heard it said that our home is an extension of ourselves, and that certainly holds true for me. I love hosting, planning, and inviting people into our home. Here are a few things that make our home extra comforting:

-A mix of adorable mugs and the best cocoa: I am a big fan of matching mugs, like these cream colored ones from West Elm (find them here), but there is something really nostalgic and fun about getting out special Christmas mugs over the holidays. Most of us have a few collected here and there, but if you don’t, you can get a collection started with these gorgeous ones from Anthropologie (HERE). I like to put all the mugs in a pretty holder, and then place them next to a big pot of homemade cocoa. Here is a perfect recipe:

Ingredients:

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3/4 cup white sugar

1 pinch salt

1/3 cup boiling water

3 1/2 cups milk

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup half-and-half cream

Directions:

Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Simmer and stir for about 2 minutes. Watch that it doesn't scorch. Stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until very hot, but do not boil! Remove from heat and add vanilla. Divide between 4 mugs. Add the cream to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to drinking temperature. (Recipe via Allrecipes)

-Add in a good book and the perfect blanket: There is a reason everyone loves those soft throw blankets…they are great for curling up with the family to watch a movie or read a book, and there are so many options, that you can easily find something to match your decor, or choose a more holiday-themed one for Christmas. HomeGoods is a good place to find throws for under $30, but I especially love the longevity of the ones from Pottery Barn (like this one).

-Light the best holiday candle: Those bath and body works candles are delicious smelling, but there are so many pretty, organic options these days. I love to support small businesses, and Etsy has a large selection of soy candles that are better for you, and that smell wonderful. Most are made with beeswax, and I like to choose ones with balsam or vanilla scents at Christmastime! Here is one of the best ones (click here).

The Basics of Decorating a Mantel

If you’re someone who is lucky enough to have a mantel in your house, you are likely looking forward to decorating it for the upcoming holidays. However, it may seem daunting to get the proportions and heights right, especially when you want it to look right with the rest of the room. There is a little bit of a science to the placement of things on a mantel, in order to get the most aesthetically pleasing result, and one that you’ll not constantly be wanting to rearrange every time you look at it (because really, who has time for that?!). The mantel can be a centerpiece of a room, and one your eye is instantly drawn to…when it’s done right! Here are some easy steps to getting your mantel ready for the holidays, and all those photo ops that you’ll want in front of it:

-Start with the anchor piece: Your large focal point can also be called the “anchor”. It can be something like a mirror, a large art piece or canvas, or something similar. Ideally, it will be the right proportion of space above the mantel ledge, and will be something neutral that doesn’t need to be changed with every season. Some pieces we love are things like windowpanes (these ones) for something that can easily work with any seasonal decor. Another neutral idea is to place an oversized clock above the mantel.

-Add items to even out the space: The best way to make sure your mantel looks just right is to think about textures, layers, and height. The items on either side of your anchor piece should be similar in size, although they don’t have to be identical. Candle holders/pillars, narrow windowpanes, shutters, or vases are all great options to start with. Again, if you want to make these neutrals like cream, black, or brown, they will be easily morphed into your seasonal arrays.

-Get holiday or season specific: Now is the fun part, but you don’t want to get too cluttery. Add just 2-3 additional items to your mantel to celebrate the season or holiday you want to highlight. For Thanksgiving, this could be some simple branches or leaves, or a small bouquet of wheat sheaves. If you’re decorating for Christmas, consider a simple banner or letters, or a little bit of sparkle (ornaments or candles). There should always be space between your items, so that it’s not a giant clump of decor…you want them to be appreciated and able to be viewed!

-During the rest of the year: When you don’t have a themed display to put together, it’s always a safe bet to include greenery or simple artwork, and always layer! A larger piece or mirror can be placed in the back of the mantel arrangement, and you can layer a smaller canvas or family photo slightly overlapped in front. This will lend depth and interest to your space.

Why to Have an Interior Design Budget (and stick to it!)

The word “budget” is one I heard frequently, and usually it’s used in negative terms, but it can truly be a positive idea. Having a budget is something that can eliminate stress, negate conflict in marriages, and keep you on track to meet your financial goals. It can also help anyone you hire, such as an interior designer (like me!), and can really give a clear picture of what you’re wanting and what’s realistic. Without a budget, these things are hard to gauge. Here are five reasons to make and keep your design parameters:

Know what you’re really working with: Sometimes, a client doesn’t realize how much something truly costs. They may under or overestimate a piece of furniture or even how much paint they will need, and it can skew their perception of how much they have to work with. This isn’t their fault, because it isn’t their field of expertise, but it makes it harder for me to help execute their dreams without a clear financial boundary. Having a budget means we won’t get to the end of a project, and run out of finances.

A budget makes sure your true priorities are reached: If you have a major goal of getting a new couch, and then using the rest of the funds to decorate around it, then a budget makes sure you get that couch, and don’t run out before you find the right one. A clear budget lets you or your designer know what you truly MUST have, and how to allocate the funds appropriately.

A clear cut budget also allows to obstacles to come up: If we hit a major snag in your design, such as a structural problem or an emergency, a clear budget will allow for issues and obstacles, and it won’t be a huge crisis to your pocketbook. It’s always great for clients to have a little wiggle room with their finances, and it helps anyone you hire to make sure everything gets taken care of. Sometimes a client also discovers that they don’t love an aspect, or that they want something more pricy than they originally thought, and a budget lets you make those changes without much stress.

Sticking to your budget won’t derail your long term financial plans: If you are currently trying to fund a large remodel, or you are saving up for a purchase (or just making a nest egg), sticking to your budget will help you breathe a little easier, and can get you one step closer to where you hope to be. It also cuts out the stress of loading everything onto a credit card with high interest, or taking out loans you know you cannot afford. You can rest easy when your design project is done, whether you hire someone or DIY, and know that you stuck to the amount you had available!

How to Define Your Design Style

With the rise of social media, design styles are all around us, almost all the time! It’s a different age for both interior designers and people designing their own homes. It can seem overwhelming to truly understand and know your own personal style, when you are shifted by the whims of your feed, but it’s so important. Knowing your personal design style shapes your buying habits, the feel of your home, and the way it makes you feel. It affects our loved ones and the way they feel when they walk into our home. It’s special and unique. Here’s a few ways to figure out what your personal style is, and how to hone it:

-Cruise the aisles of your nearest home store, and see what draws your eye: Sometimes, when you shop, you find out that what you thought you loved isn’t what continually draws you in. If you can, accumulate the things you love into one cart, and snap a photo. It can help you make an inspiration board or mood board, and can solidify the look you are going for.

-Look at where you draw inspiration from: Do you love interior design magazines? Do you enjoy putting together boards on Pinterest? Do you find awe inspiring ideas when you’re in nature (hiking or walking)? These can help guide your design choices, whether they are bold, earthy, or bohemian. Oftentimes, your wardrobe reflects a little bit of your personal taste as well. People who love neutral clothing and staple pieces often also love a minimalist and stripped down design style. Those willing to take more risks usually reflect this in their wardrobe and their home.

-Think about what your home or space is used for: If you want a very cozy feel, with warmth and texture, then a farmhouse aesthetic is likely what you will gravitate to (or least elements of it). If you love entertaining and enjoy modern flair, you may love wide open spaces with accents like marble and gold. It also helps to take into consideration that your taste can change over time. If you have little ones at home, your style may reflect an easier, simpler version of your personal tastes, simply because of the utility of your needs. In ten years from now, you may be able to incorporate things you aren’t able to yet.

-Start with anchor pieces, and work your way out: If you love kitschy items, and you buy a huge gold pineapple at Home Goods, you may have trouble building a room around it. It’s more ideal to start with a beautiful piece of furniture, like a couch or bed, in order to get a clearer picture and prevent yourself from ending up with tons of small, stylish pieces that have no cohesive element. Always start with a color palette, or anchor pieces of furniture in order to solidify your style.

Welcome Spring!

Spring is always a time of personal inspiration for me. The fruit trees are just beginning to blossom, and I spy bold tulips sprouting up. I have been outside, elbow deep in the dirt, trimming my roses and also soaking up some much-needed sunshine! I wanted to share some of the things that I have my eye on, and that are inspiring me in this bright and cheery season:

-I am obsessed with all things blue and woven right now! I spotted these basket pendant lights at the Surf Rider Hotel recently in Malibu, and fell right in love. I love the beach vibe, and the simplicity of the design. You may also enjoy the whole gallery of the beautiful hotel, which you can find HERE!

-Everything blue: I am loving the blue-grey tones and the dusty blue colors that have found their way into the spring Pottery Barn and Anthro catalogs. This is a gorgeous new rug that I spotted at Anthropologie, and it’s an indoor/outdoor one that would be perfect for a patio space.

-The Serena and Lily wallpapers come all so many gorgeous prints and textures, and I have begun dreaming up where I might include them! Here are some of my favorites:

-Blue is also a great color to paint a piece of furniture to freshen it up, like a dresser or a table base. My favorite type of paint is Jolie paint, which is known for it’s beautiful and lasting pigment. They are priced similarly to other matte paint brands, and they are well worth it for the finishes and quality that truly last for years! Their French blue and Slate colors would be a perfect addition to any refinish work.

-The last way that I invite Spring into the home is with pretty baskets! Not only can they be used to organize papers and hide clutter, they can also group together pretty pieces like mason jars and florals/greens (I buy mine at Trader Joes), and decorate a countertop or island space .

Surviving the Winter Blues | Color and Inspiration

Are you feeling like the winter blues are setting in? In our little corner of Oregon, it’s been pretty rainy and snowy. The cold and dreary temperatures always make me feel ready to clean and organize everything with light and airy colors. I’ve found the bright and crisp tones help brighten my mood and my family’s space. Here are some of the colors that I love for giving any room a facelift…they are dependable and always fresh!

Pretty blues and crisp whites are always a beautiful combination that brings a ton of light to any room, whether it’s a bathroom, kitchen or family room. You can weave bright blues and whites into throw blankets, pillows, and towels for even more impact. I also love bringing in clean and pretty storage solutions. There seems to be an influx of “stuff” after the holidays, and it’s so nice to find clever ways to organize and store things to make daily life a little more streamlined. The space below is a little more modern and minimalistic than my personal, typical style, but it’s sure pretty and relaxing!

This chic, rustic farmhouse hutch is also very pretty and a little more charming. The bright white is tempered with some bright greens, and a little bit of grey. While it’s a little more grounded, it’s just as lovely and holds lots of inspiration for  break from the winter blues! It is also something that is extremely practical, and can hold items like dishes, decor, or extra seasonal florals that you don’t have space for in linen closets!

Decorating for Christmas | Style and Inspiration

I haul out my Christmas decorations in November! I know, I know...it’s early. But my family and I absolutely love Christmas, and we love the feel our home has when it’s decorated for the holidays. As far as we are concerned, it’s never too early to get the holiday ambience going! I’m sharing some of my favorite pieces today here on the blog, ones that you can get in store right now! Some of my personal pieces are ones I’ve had for years and they aren’t available any more, but these would be the perfect addition or beginning to a Christmas collection and a very stylish, cozy home!

These wintery, textured stockings are at Pottery Barn, and you can add custom embroidery to each of them. I love the stockings from PB, because they last for years and years, and can become an heirloom item that can be passed down to generations. I love their mantle inspiration, with plenty of rustic wood, greenery (a-la-Joanna-Gaines), and industrial metal. They are the perfect look!

These vintage inspired ornaments are so beautiful, and add just a touch of charm to your tree. You could even add them to a glass cloche or another display item for the most perfect little arrangement or tablescape. I also loved these mercury glass ornaments and the way they gently shimmer without being too sparkly.

If you’re short on time, adding just a few key pieces can add a ton of warmth and beauty to any space. I always love a few warm, textured throws like this one, oversized throw pillows in seasonal colors, and of course, a warm, scented candle to set the mood! You don’t have to go overboard and spend a ton of money, especially if you already have large, neutral items in your home like a mantle, fireplace, sofa table, or counter top. We love the gorgeous look below as well, from West Elm..it’s simple and sweet.
